Livestream about Numbers, coincidences and tipping points

Research dissemination

On 5 November 2024, statistician Susanne Ditlevsen will give lectures in cinemas, libraries, public universities, cultural centres, high schools, and schools in cities across the country, including Greenland and the Faroe Islands.

Tal, tilfældigheder og tipping points

The lecture will be live-streamed from Aarhus University as part of the "Public Lectures in Science" lecture series. The lecture series is organised by the Faculty of Natural Sciences, Aarhus University, with support from the Carlsberg Foundation.

The lectures in the series can only be experienced while they are being held, and only at the locations hosting the lectures. The many cinemas, libraries and cultural centres have received good coverage of Susanne Ditlevsen’s lecture in the local newspapers across the country. See the locations here.

Susanne will talk about some of statistics' lucky and less lucky stories - from sailors with scurvy, to infant mortality in maternity clinics, possible racism in the American police force and a technical failure in a space shuttle that had fatal consequences.

She also delves into her research, including the maths behind tipping points and how statistics can be used to predict the likelihood of Europe's warm ocean current collapsing this century.

Susanne Ditlevsen will answer selected questions submitted by the audience during the lecture via SMS and Twitter. The lecture is complemented by an article in the November issue of the journal Aktuel Naturvidenskab.
