More math students

Study start 2016

The Mathematics study programme has received 37 percent more applications this year. It is the largest increase among the undergraduate programs in the SCIENCE Faculty. Actuarial Mathematics has 33 percent more applicants, Mathematics-Economics 4 percent.

That does not mean that it is easy to get accepted as a Mathematics-Economics student. There were 308 applicants competing for 63 seats! Actuarial Mathematics had 239 applicants for 53 seats. Mathematics offered 146 seats, but there were 501 applicants.

- I am pleased to see that so many talented young people interested in such difficult courses, says Erik Kjær Pedersen, who is retiring as Head of Department.

- There is great demand for graduate mathematicians, both in business and as teachers in high school.

The increased number of applicants means rising requirements for applicants grade average:

2016 2015
Actuarial Mathematics 10,8 10,6
Mathematics 7,1 All applicants accepted
Mathematics-Economics 8,6 8,8

The mathematical graduate programs are also reporting significant growth this year. The initial figures say that about 160 students start the MSc in either Mathematics, Actuarial Mathematics, Mathematics-Economics or Statistics. Last year, the number was 113.

 - It’s good news - just before I leave, says Erik Kjær Pedersen – who is from 1 August is professor emeritus at the departmen. Michael Sørensen succeeds him as Head of Department.
