Bo Markussen, professor
Bo Markussen has been appointed Professor of Statistics at the Department of Mathematical Sciences from 1 March 2024.
"Teaching and education is a core activity for Bo, and he contributes on many levels, e.g. to the PhD programmes at SCIENCE, on specialized continuing education courses for industry, on the master's and bachelor's programmes at MATH, and he is committed to the development and improvement of STEM education in secondary schools", says Mogens Steffensen, Head of Department at MATH.
"As a researcher, Bo is, among other things, a committed and crucial contributor to a wide range of both purely statistical and interdisciplinary research collaborations and collaborations with public and private organizations. In addition, he has significant experience as head of the Data Science Lab", emphasizes Mogens Steffensen.
Bo's main theoretical research areas are functional data analysis (FDA) and multiple testing. Within FDA, Bo has contributed with operator-based methods and methods for multivariate data. In multiple testing, Bo has, among other things, developed a new method for adjusting p-values that allows correlation between the incoming tests.
Bo has been involved in the Data Science Lab since its inception in 2013 and as manager since 2021. He has been involved in countless research projects and contributed to the associated publications and helped hundreds of students with statistics for their theses.
"Bo manages to bridge the gap between theoretical statistics and applied projects and systematically incorporates new knowledge in his teaching and consultancy, for example when it comes to multiple testing. He is a highly sought-after teacher and collaborator because he has both a great professional surplus and at the same time takes all questions and challenges, large and small, seriously," says Head of Section, Professor Niels Richard Hansen.
Bo holds an MSc. and PhD in statistics from UCPH. From 2001 to 2006 he worked as a postdoc at MATH, at Humboldt Universität zu Berlin and at the Department of Computer Science. From 2006 he was assistant professor at the Department of Basic Sciences and Environment, and from 2009 associate professor at the same department. When IGM was merged in 2012, Bo moved to the Department of Mathematical Sciences.
From 2015 Bo was a board member of the Danish Society for Theoretical Statistics, and from 2017 to 2019 chairman.
