Joan Ferrer Rodríguez, PhD student

Newly employed

Joan is employed as a PhD student from 1 September 2024, working with the Algebra and Geometry Section.

Joan Ferrer Rodríguez

Joan completed his bachelor's studies at the Autonomous University of Barcelona before moving to Copenhagen to enrol in the master's in Mathematics in 2022. He wrote his Masters Thesis titled “A-discriminants theory, Viro’s patchworking and nonnegativity of polynomials” under the supervision of Professor Elisenda Feliu and Máté L. Telek.

In his thesis, Joan used techniques arising from the field of reaction networks to design an algorithm to decide the nonnegativity of real polynomials. Currently, Joan is trying to exploit this algorithm further, since many questions in optimization and reaction networks theory can be reduced to the nonnegativity of polynomials. With Elisenda and Máté (now Max Planck Institute, Leipzig) as his PhD supervisors, he will study them in the context of real semialgebraic geometry.
