Luigi Gresele, postdoc
Luigi was employed on 2 January 2024 as a postdoc at the Copenhagen Causality Lab, working with Prof. Sebastian Weichwald.
Luigi’s research is funded by the Danish Data Science Academy. His research project is called “Causal Representation Learning: Conceptual Foundations, Identifiability and Scientific Applications”.
His research focuses on the intersection between machine learning and causality. In particular, he is interested in identifiable approaches to representation learning inspired by principles of causal inference and nonlinear independent component analysis.
Luigi earned his PhD (summa cum laude) from the Max Planck Institute of Intelligent Systems and the University of Tübingen, under the supervision of Bernhard Schölkopf, with a thesis titled: "Learning Identifiable Representations: Independent Influences and Multiple Views".
During his PhD, he did an ELLIS exchange in Paris with the Parietal team at Inria-CEA, hosted by Bertrand Thirion and Aapo Hyvärinen. He also worked as an Applied Science Intern at Amazon Research, under the supervision of Dominik Janzing.
Before his PhD, Luigi studied Physics of Complex Systems at Politecnico di Torino (Italy), and Université Paris-Sud (now Paris-Saclay, France).
