Munir Hiabu, assistant professor
Munir Hiabu joined the department 1 September 2021 as tenure-track Assistant Professor in Data Science and Actuarial Mathematics, working in the Insurance and Economics section.
Munir works on nonparametric statistics and statistical machine learning methods where he tries to understand and develop new ways of how structure in high(er) dimensional data can be utilized to provide both enhanced predictions and/or quantifications of risk as well as interpretation and visualization of predictors and risk factors.
His theoretical work is driven by applications. He works on reserving problems in actuarial science and the separation and visualization of different time-effects in biostatistics. Another application he is currently interested in is mortality predictions.
Before joining KU, Munir was a lecturer in statistics at the University of Sydney, Australia. Before that, he was a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at Cass Business School - City, University of London, UK, working on “Minimising longevity and investment risk while optimising future pension plans”.
Munir has a PhD in Actuarial Science from Cass Business School, supervised by Jens Nielsen, Enno Mammen and Lola Martinez-Miranda. Furthermore, he has mathematics degrees (BSc, MSc) from Heidelberg University, Germany, supervised by Johanna F Ziegel and Mark Podolskij.
