Emil Steen Jørgensen, PhD student

Matthias Christandl appointed professor

With effect of April 1, the Dean has appointed Matthias Christandl as Professor for Mathematical Physics at the Department of Mathematical Sciences. He is working with the research group Geometric Analysis and Mathematical Physics.

Pascal's triangle and 100 caramels

Three first-year mathematics students chose to follow a second-year course - and submit the course mandatory project for the talent competition Young Scientists. It gave them a first prize, a trip to China and much glory.

Rune Harder Bak, PhD student

Rune Harder Bak was hired as a PhD student at the Department of Mathematical Sciences in March 2014. His supervisor is Henrik Holm and he is part of the research group Algebra and Number Theory. The area is Homological Algebra where Rune is studying generalizations of ring theoretical results for Differential Graded Algebras.

School-children learned how to gamble

The Festival of Research, 24 and 25 April 2014, was a success across the country. At the City Hall Square in Copenhagen the Department of Mathematical Sciences were present with a "Gaming Café". Ten school classes and interested citizens and tourists learned about game strategies.

Obituary: Hans-Bjørn Foxby

Hans-Bjørn Foxby, born 12 February 1947, was MSc in 1969 and Licentiate (PhD) in 1973 from the University of Copenhagen. Since 1975 he has been employed at the Department of Mathematical Sciences, UCPH, first as an associate professor and later as a senior associate professor (1988).

David Schrittesser started as a postdoc at Department of Mathematical Sciences, UCPH, on 15 March 2014. He works in the non-commutative geometry group.

Centre for Symmetry and Deformation renewed until 2019

With a DKK 40 million grant, the Danish National Research Foundation has renewed the Centre for Symmetry and Deformation at the Department of Mathematical Sciences for a second 5 year period 2015-2019.

Hiroshi Ando is hired as postdoc at the Department of Mathematical Sciences from March 1st, 2014, researching with the research group Non-Commutative Geometry and Centre for Symmetry and Deformation.

Open House for high school students

The interest in mathematics studies was great when SCIENCE held an Open House on North Campus 26 February. 1.200 high school students filled “Vandrehallen”, and many found their way to the MATH info-booth, where students responded to questions about the studies.

Postdoctoral fellowship to Sune Precht Reeh

PhD student at the Department of Mathematical Sciences, Sune Precht Reeh, has received a postdoctoral fellowship at 1.7 million DKK from the Danish Council for Independent Research. The grant is to be used on a two-year study in the United States, primarily at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
