Title: The unstable homology of mapping class groups of surfaces.

Abstract: The mapping class group MCG(S) of a surface S is its group of diffeomorphisms up to isotopy. Letting the genus of S tend to infinity, the homology of MCG(S)stabilizes and is well understood. However, its unstable integral homology is almost unknown. In this talk, I will discuss some of the techniques and spaces that are used to detect the unstable homology classes. Part of this is joint work with Daniela Egas-Santander and Carl-Friedrich Bödigheimer.
