Title: Maximality arguments in von Neumann algebras theory and ergodic theory

Abstract: The so-called Maximality arguments in von Neumann algebras theory have been first used by Murray and von Neumann in their type classification of factors. Since then, this method was used fruitfully in many of the deepest results of the theory, including most notably the classification of injective factors. In this talk, we will explain what maximality arguments are and we will present some recent new applications in von Neumann algebras theory (full type III factors) and ergodic theory (local spectral gap, stable equivalence relations).
