Title: Relative pairings in K-Theory and higher index theory

Abstract: This lecture will illustrate the use of relative K-theory groups, relative cyclic cohomology groups and their pairings in higher index theory.  I will survey recent results in higher Atiyah-Patodi-Singer index theory: first on Galois coverings (joint with Gorokhovsky and Moriyoshi) and then on spaces endowed with a proper cocompact G-action, with G a Lie group or a Lie groupoid (joint with Posthuma).
