Title: A brief history of type $II_1$ factors

Abstract: I will discuss some highlights of the story of $II_1$ factors, starting with the
pioneering papers of von Neumann and Murray-von Neumann and ending
with  new techniques that were developed these last 20 years
and are the source of remarkable breakthroughs.
